Performing original research is exhilarating.  You have an opportunity to examine basic questions facing our field that can be addressed through new ideas in document image analysis. You will become an international expert in a particular area.  Others will seek out your advice on important topics.  In the process, not only will you learn a great deal, but you will also have a chance to make the world a better place.  With this opportunity comes significant responsibility, however.  In this talk, I will discuss some of the expectations held by established researchers for graduate students just beginning their careers.  My goal is to offer advice that I hope is helpful, and to outline some of the things you should keep in mind to increase your chances of having a successful and rewarding PhD experience.
