Ergina Kavallieratou was born in Kefalonia, Greece. She received her Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1996 from the Polytechnic School of the University of Patras and her PhD in Handwritten Optical Character Recognition and Document Image processing from the same department in 2000. She teaches in Greek Open University, since 2001. Since September 2004, she is a member of the teaching staff of the department of Information and Communication System Engineering, University of the Aegean, as Assistant Professor since 2012. Her research interests include Optical Character Recognition, Document Image Analysis, Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition.

Irine Stathi Received a Laurea from DAMS, University of Bologna, , in 1990 and the Ph.D in Cinema Theory and Communication from the Department of Mass Media and Communication, Panteion University of Athens, in 1996. She is an Associate Professor in Theory of Cinema and Audiovisuals at the Department of Cultural Technology and Communication, at the University of the Aegean. Her research interest include: film theory and film history, audiovisuals and new technologies, relationship between cinema and the other arts, Film preservation. She has collaborated as well with the Greek director Theo Angelopoulos for more than 10 years and she is the responsible for the digitalization of his Archive.

Efstathios Stamatatos received the diploma degree in electrical engineering (1994) and the doctoral degree in electrical and computer engineering (2000), both from the University of Patras, Greece. He was a research associate of the Wire Communications Lab. of the University of Patras from 1995 to 2003. He also joined the Polytechnic University of Madrid (1998) as a visiting researcher, the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence as a post-doc researcher (2001-2002), and the TEI of Ionian Islands as an adjunct professor (2002-2004). Since 2004 he is a faculty member of the Dept. of Information and Communication Systems Engineering, University of the Aegean.

Basilis G. Gatos received his Electrical Engineering Diploma in 1992 and his Ph.D. degree in 1998, both from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of Democritus University of Thrace, Xanthi, Greece. His Ph.D. thesis is on Optical Character Recognition Techniques. He is currently working as a Researcher at the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications of the National Center for Scientific Research "Demokritos", Athens, Greece. His main research interests are in Image Processing and Document Image Analysis, OCR and Pattern Recognition. He has more than 110 publications in journals and international conference proceedings and has participated in several research programs funded by the European community. He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece, of the Editorial Board of the International Journal on Document Analysis and Recognition (IJDAR) and program committee member of several international Conferences and Workshops.

Dr. Nikolaos Mitianoudis is currently a Lecturer in Image Processing at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the Democritus University of Thrace. He received the diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 1998. He received the MSc in Communications and Signal Processing from Imperial College London, UK in 2000 and the PhD in Audio Source Separation using Independent Component Analysis from Queen Mary, University of London, UK in 2004. He is also a Senior Member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. His research interests include Statistical Signal Processing, Independent Component Analysis, Audio Signal Processing, Image Fusion and Audio, Image, 3D object retrieval.

Ioannis Pratikakis is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Democritus University of Thrace in Xanthi, Greece. He received the Ph.D. degree in 3D Image analysis from the Electronics engineering and Informatics department at VrijeUniversiteit Brussel, Belgium, in January 1999. From March 1999 to March 2000, he joined IRISA/ViSTA group, Rennes, France as an INRIA postdoctoral fellow. From January 2003 to June 2010, he was working as Adjunct Researcher at the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications in the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, Athens, Greece. His research interests lie in image processing, pattern recognition, vision and graphics, and more specifically, in document image analysis and recognition, medical image analysis as well as multimedia content analysis, search and retrieval with a particular focus on visual content. He has served as co-chair of the Eurographics Workshop on 3D object retrieval (3DOR) in 2008 and 2009 as well as Guest Editor for the Special issue on 3D object retrieval at the International Journal of Computer Vision. He will be the co-organiser of the International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition (ICFHR 2014). He is Senior Member of the IEEE, member of the Board of the Hellenic Artificial Intelligence Society for the period 2010-2012 and member of the European Association for Computer Graphics (Eurographics).

Athanassios (Thanos) Skodras is the Professor of Digital Systems of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Patras, Greece. He holds a Physics degree from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (1980), a Computer Engineering & Informatics degree and a PhD degree in Electronics, both from the University of Patras, Greece. From 1986 to 2002 he has been holding teaching and research positions at the Departments of Physics and Computer Engineering & Informatics of the University of Patras, and the Research Academic Computer Technology Institute, Patras, Greece. From Oct 2002 to Feb 2013 he has been Professor of Digital Systems and Head of Computer Science, School of Science and Technology, Hellenic Open University, Patras, Greece. He has been Deputy Dean (2004-2006) and Dean (2010-2013) of the School of Science and Technology, and member of the Research Committee (2004-2012) of the Hellenic Open University, Greece. During the academic years 1988-89 and 1996-97 he was a Visiting Academic with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Imperial, London, UK. His current research interests include image and video coding, digital watermarking, fast transform algorithms, real-time digital signal processing and multimedia applications. He has over 140 publications in refereed journals and conference proceedings, authored or co-authored 6 books, 3 book chapters, and holds 2 international patents.

Apostolos Antonacopoulos leads the Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis (PRImA) research Lab at the School of Computing, Science and Engineering at the University of Salford, UK where he currently holds the post of Senior Lecturer. He received his PhD from the University of Manchester, Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), UK in 1995. From 1995 to 2004 he worked as Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Liverpool where he founded PRImA. In 2005, he received the IAPR/ICDAR Young Investigator Award for "Outstanding service to the ICDAR community and his innovative research in historical document processing applications." He is currently serving as the Chair of the IAPR Education Committee (2010-2012). In 2008-2010 he served as the 1st Vice President of the IAPR and prior to that he chaired or served as a member of a number of IAPR and other committees. Current significant project involvement includes the €12M IMPACT EU-funded project (extraction and recognition of text from historical documents) and the €4M Europeana Newspapers EU-Funded project (extraction and recognition of text in newspapers for the European Digital Library).

Josep Lladós received the degree in Computer Sciences in 1991 from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and the PhD degree in Computer Sciences in 1997 from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain) and the Université Paris 8 (France). Currently he is an Associate Professor at the Computer Sciences Department of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and a staff researcher of the Computer Vision Center, where he is also the director since January 2009. He is the head of the Pattern Recognition and Document Analysis Group (2009SGR-00418). He is chair holder of Knowledge Transfer of the UAB Research Park and Santander Bank. His current research fields are document analysis, graphics recognition and structural and syntactic pattern recognition. He has been the head of a number of Computer Vision R+D projects and published more than 150 papers in national and international conferences and journals. J. Lladós is an active member of the Image Analysis and Pattern Recognition Spanish Association (AERFAI), a member society of the IAPR. He is currently the chairman of the IAPR-ILC (Industrial Liaison Committee). Formerly he served as chairman of the IAPR TC-10, the Technical Committee on Graphics Recognition, and also he is a member of the IAPR TC-11 (reading Systems) and IAPR TC-15 (Graph based Representations).He is editor in chief of the ELCVIA (Electronic Letters on Computer Vision and Image Analysis) and he serves on the Editorial Board of the IJDAR (International Journal in Document Analysis and Recognition), and also a PC member of a number of international conferences. He was the recipient of the IAPR-ICDAR Young Investigator Award in 2007. He was the general chair of the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR’2009) held in Barcelona in July 2009, and co-chair of the IAPR TC-10 Graphics Recognition Workshop of 2003 (Barcelona), 2005 (Hong Kong), 2007 (Curitiba) and 2009 (La Rochelle). Josep Lladós has also experience in technological transfer and in 2002 he created the company ICAR Vision Systems, a spin-off of the Computer Vision Center working on Document Image Analysis, after winning the entrepreneurs award from the Catalonia Government on business projects on Information Society Technologies in 2000.

Daniel Lopresti received his bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College in 1982 and his Ph.D. in computer science from Princeton University in 1987. He began his career on the faculty of the Department of Computer Science at Brown University. He then went on to help found the Matsushita Information Technology Laboratory in Princeton, and later moved to the research staff at Bell Labs. In 2003, he joined the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Lehigh University where his research focuses on fundamental algorithmic and systems-related questions in applied pattern recognition, including document analysis and related topic areas. He became Chair of the CSE Department in July 2009.
